Papers were copied by N.P. Howard, clerk of the General Court of Virginia, 1847 Sept[embe]r 22. Papers include Downman's letter of patent from Alfonso VI, King of Portugal to captain the ship "Mary" and his deposition, answer, bonds and promise; letters authorizing Johannes De Decker and Nicolaes Varleth to act as agents for the Dutch West India Company; deposition of Paulus Heytridder (captain of the ship "The Arms of Amsterdam"); letters and extracts of letters between Sir William Berkeley, Peter Stuyvesant and the Council of Virginia (concerning payment for a horse); depositions of William Mann and Jeffrey Waller (concerning the ship "The Merchant's Delight") and the decision of the General Court to send the case to the High Court of Admiralty.
